One of the advantages of having a really slow reading year is that you find out when you go to look for things to read that not only have your favorite authors released new books, but it’s been long enough that they are easy to get at the library.
And I know that I said that these reviews would not be in-depth, but I wanted to take a minute to talk about Win, the deadly, almost-completely-but-yet-somehow-not-quite-sociopathic sidekick in the 12-book Myron Bolitar series.
I love Win. He is absolutely my favorite sociopath-adjacent character in any book ever.
But Win on his own is…he’s a lot to take. He doesn’t really care about much, and he has zero problem killing folks that need it, according to his peculiar moral code.
What redeems him is how much he loves his best friend/business partner Myron. And he loves Myron a lot. It’s one of the deepest, most profound platonic loves I can remember. Two examples from the book:
“This was an easy call for me. I would sacrifice a hundred Bo Storms to save your parents. And while you don’t want to admit it, so would you.” It was an uncomfortable truth. “Dangerous way to think,” Myron said. “Then you probably don’t want to know how many lives I would sacrifice to save you,” Win said.
“You say he’s your son, I remind you that it’s only biological, that you barely know him, you say that doesn’t matter, that I should have asked you before I did anything like this, I say there is no harm in doing a background check, that if I found nothing you would be none the wiser, you say yes but you should have, I interrupt you and remind you that there is no one on this planet I care about more than you, that I would never do anything to harm you, that whatever I do, I do to protect you because I love you. Is that how we are going to have to play this?”
They just…murder me in all the best ways. 🥰
Don’t start here…this is #12. But if you are a mystery girlie (or fella), you should read these books. They are among my very favorites.
Love y’all.
